What you need to be truly happy is the TRUTH.
But what is the truth?
Chances are you’re reading this post because you’re not happy in life and you’re taking action to improve your situation. You’re searching for the truth.
So your search for the truth usually begins with a problem or a conflict. If your life is all rosy and beautiful, you might not be motivated to know more. You would just be content to stay where you are.
And so you just learned one truth from experience. Problems or sufferings are not bad at all. They push you to learn more and when you learn more, you grow. Be grateful, then, for your problems and sufferings. Welcome them with the anticipation of becoming a better person. Remember this truth as this plays a big part in making you truly happy.
To be truly happy, you need the truth about life. This truth is like the instruction (manual) that comes with every gadget, device, toy or equipment that you buy. Without the instruction, you won’t know how to properly use the thing and therefore won’t fully enjoy your experience using the thing.
If you know what life is all about, you would know how to live your life the right way. You wouldn’t be wasting your time doing things that are unnecessary. And you would most likely know what would make you truly happy.
Unless you know the truth about life, all your efforts in being happy would just be wasted.
So what is the truth about life?
Can we find this truth in science? Can the great philosophers provide us the truth about life? As far as I know, the answer is no.
Maybe the right question is who is the Truth?
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)
If Jesus is indeed the truth, you need to know Jesus to be truly happy.
If you’re a Catholic, you should know Jesus. If you truly know Him, you should be truly happy. If you’re not truly happy, you don’t really know Jesus.
So, how well do you know Jesus?
As a Catholic, you must already know that Jesus is the Son of God, the second person in the Holy Trinity, the word of God made flesh, the bread of life, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the way the truth and the life, the Prince of Peace, the King of kings and many other titles.
The Catholic Church also teaches that Jesus is the new Adam. Adam through his disobedience brought condemnation to the world while Jesus through his perfect obedience brought redemption to the world.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners,
so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
Adam and Eve ,by listening to and believing the devil as represented by the serpent, disobeyed God and as a result, they lost access to God’s graces which were freely available before the disobedience. This disobedience, which is now known as the original sin, has brought death and sufferings to the world.
We, the descendants of Adam and Eve were born tainted with the original sin, the tendency towards disobeying God and listening to the devil. We are in essence slaves to sin.
But God does not want us to stay as slaves to sin. His original plan was for us to enjoy His goodness that’s why he created Adam and Eve in His own image, freely enjoying His graces.
And so out of God’s great love for us, He gave us His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to atone for all our sins. Jesus died on the cross to redeem us from the slavery of sin. On the third day, Jesus rose again and conquered death and so restored life.
Through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice, we ceased being slaves and instead were made sons and daughters of God, rightful heirs to God’s goodness and abundance. How great is that! Knowing this should make you truly happy.
Only a fool would not want to be a son or daughter of the Almighty God!
But there is a condition. We need to believe in Jesus in order to be redeemed, to be sons and daughters of God, to be worthy of eternal life with God.
How do we show that we believe in Jesus? Can believing truly in our hearts suffice?
The Catholic Church teaches that good works are the fruits of our faith in God. And so we can show that we believe in Jesus by our actions. If we believe in Jesus, it should show in our actions, in the way we live our lives. We should be living our lives following His commandments, even following the way He lived on earth.
And so this is what life is all about – proving your belief in Jesus that you may be worthy of eternal life with God.
Read the parable of the ten pounds Luke 19:11-27 to have an idea of how you should live your life. In essence, you should make your life fruitful, making use of what God has given you, all for His glory.
Read also Matthew 25:31-46 and be reminded to serve others especially the poor and the needy.
Knowing this truth about life, you should lose interest in all worldly things. It’s hard at first but with prayers, it can be done. Remember that love for these worldly things leads to the devil.
Losing interest in worldly things, your life would be less stressful. You would no longer envy others for their worldly success. You would no longer obsess about worldly success. And you would be happier.
You wouldn’t want to repeat what Adam and Eve did which brought condemnation to the world. You wouldn’t want to disobey God and listen to the devil.
Take note not to listen to the lies of the devil. Whatever is contrary to Jesus who is the TRUTH is a lie and of the devil. Use this as your guide in life.
Today, many are led astray by the lies of the devil. Many are led to believe that to be happy is to please oneself.
But Jesus said to deny yourself (Luke 9:23). Denying yourself is really obeying God. If someone tells you to choose yourself, he is like telling you to disobey God.
Remember, life is not about making yourself happy for your own sake. Life is about obeying God, proving your love for Him. After all, God has the power to do anything. Might as well please the One who can do anything. He deserves to be pleased and loved.
If you are living to please yourself, if you are driven by pride and want to achieve worldly success, be warned. You will never be truly happy because you are living your life the wrong way.
Jesus also said to enter through the narrow gate that leads to life. Today, many want the easy way. They enter through the wider gate that leads to destruction. They don’t want to go through any difficulties. They want instant gratification. They are following the way of the devil.
When you choose to enter through the narrow gate, it will be difficult at first but you will be blessed and in the end you will be happier. Trust in God and His word and not the lies of the devil.
It is sad to see that many choose the wider gate and resort to birth control pills, abortion, divorce and euthanasia. Many choose the pleasure of giving in to their homosexual tendencies. Let us pray that they may be enlightened and that they may repent and amend their ways.
At this point, remember the truth about problems and sufferings I mentioned at the beginning of this post. When you face your problem and suffer through it and not avoid it, you will be learning so much. Sufferings are the result of man’s disobedience but they are allowed by God for our own good. God uses our sufferings to transform us into His wonderful masterpieces.
When you allow yourself to be transformed for God’s glory, be ready to receive God’s blessings! God always delivers His promises. You can always count on Him.
So, the next time you see problems lurking around, welcome them with open arms and be willing to suffer through them. When your mind is set this way, you will never be easily disappointed. You will always feel blessed and truly happy!
The only way to be truly happy in life is to live the way Jesus did – with humility, obedience and willingness to suffer and sacrifice. In this way of life, there is less stress. You will most likely have many friends and few, if not zero enemies.
If you live the other way around, you will find yourself in constant struggle to be ahead of the others. You will most likely be in constant envy and jealousy. Your life will be so miserable.
Choose Jesus and be truly happy.
Let me repeat. What you need to be truly happy is the truth and that truth is Jesus.
